# Upgrade from AppSignal for Ruby gem 4.x to 5.x

> A guide to help applications upgrade from AppSignal for Ruby gem 4 to version 5.

Upgrading from AppSignal for Ruby 4.x to 5.x requires no changes to your application. Update the gem and your app reports data in the same way as it did with 4.x.

  Upgrade to the latest 5.x series

In the app's `Gemfile`, remove or update any version lock on the `appsignal` gem, and run `bundle update appsignal` in a terminal in the same directory as the `Gemfile`.

  Collector mode
</h2>

AppSignal for Ruby 5.x adds [collector mode](/ruby/configuration/collector), which sends data to an AppSignal collector using OpenTelemetry. Collector mode is optional: the gem only uses it when you set the [`collector_endpoint`](/ruby/configuration/options#option-collector_endpoint) option.
