# Upgrading OpenTelemetry for Java

> Update the AppSignal collector and the OpenTelemetry Java agent to get updates, bug, and security fixes.

New releases include updates, bug and security fixes, so keep AppSignal up to date.

## Update the collector

Java apps send their data through the AppSignal collector, which gets its own fixes. If you use the hosted collector, AppSignal updates it for you. If you run your own collector, follow the upgrade steps for the [Linux package](https://docs.appsignal.com/collector/installation/upgrading.md#linux-package) or the [Docker image](https://docs.appsignal.com/collector/installation/upgrading.md#docker-image).

## Update the OpenTelemetry Java agent

Download the [latest `opentelemetry-javaagent.jar`](https://github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-java-instrumentation/releases/latest/download/opentelemetry-javaagent.jar) and restart your application with it.
